Thanksgiving is not a Mexican holiday. Christmas very much is, but not on the day most visitors expect.
Those two facts shape every holiday meal on this coast, and most people arrive knowing neither. We live in Cancún. This is the guide we keep wanting to hand people.
On the fourth Thursday in November there is no cultural momentum here at all. What exists instead is a hospitality industry that knows precisely how many Americans are in its dining rooms that week. Turkey appears because guests want it. Some kitchens treat that as an occasion worth cooking for. Others put a bird on a buffet line, add a premium, and call it a tradition.
Christmas is the opposite. It matters enormously, and the evening that matters is the twenty-fourth. Nochebuena is when Mexican families eat, and they eat late, often after eleven. December 25 is the quiet day, the recovery day. If you are planning a Christmas Day lunch the way you would at home, you are planning around the wrong date, and some independent restaurants will simply be closed.
Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, 26 November 2026. Nochebuena is Thursday, 24 December, and it is the bigger night. Six properties have published 2026 programming so far and almost none has published a price. If you already know where you want to eat, call now. Guests staying on property book before anyone outside does.

Nochebuena and Christmas Day
If you take one thing from this guide, take this. In Mexico the twenty-fourth is the event. A resort will serve you a Christmas Day lunch because its guests expect one, but the night the country actually celebrates is Christmas Eve, and that is when the kitchens try hardest.

Where to eat without staying at a resort
This is the question we are asked most, and it is the one with the least published information behind it.
No property in this guide has confirmed in writing that outside diners are welcome at its holiday sittings. That is not a no. Several of these restaurants take outside reservations the rest of the year. It means the policy changes during holiday weeks and nobody is publishing it.
So call. Not the booking widget, not a third-party platform, the restaurant itself. And ask two separate questions, because the answers differ: can we reserve without staying here, and is there a different price if we do.
We will list confirmed outside-guest access here as we get it, property by property. That is the single most useful thing this guide can contain, and it is the thing we are working hardest on.
If you are traveling with children
Two Santa arrivals are confirmed and both are at noon on 25 December. Fairmont Mayakoba brings him to Maykana Beach Club with no reservation needed. Waldorf Astoria brings him to the Clock in the lobby.
Waldorf also has the deepest children’s programming published so far, with holiday workshops and sweet-making sessions running daily through the period, plus Mexican cooking classes. Rosewood is running 5k runs on 24 and 25 November for anyone who wants to earn their Thanksgiving dinner.
One practical note from traveling here with our own baby. Holiday sittings are long, late and loud, and a 6.30 reservation on Nochebuena is a different proposition with a toddler than it looks on paper. Ask what time the room actually fills.
Before you book
All-inclusive does not mean included
Thanksgiving, Nochebuena and New Year dinners are frequently charged as a supplement, even for guests already on an all-inclusive plan. This surprises people every single year. Ask before you assume.
Reserve by phone or email, not by form
Holiday sittings here are often managed on a list the restaurant keeps itself. An online booking widget frequently cannot see that list, and a third-party platform almost never can.
Check the year on the page you are reading
We found three properties this week publishing holiday pages from previous seasons, including one with a Thanksgiving date that belonged to 2025 and a festive program whose prices were last year’s. If a page does not state the year, assume nothing and call.
Spanish helps
Not because anyone will refuse you in English, but because the person who actually knows whether tables remain is often not the person answering the English line.
What prices looked like before
No 2026 prices have been published by any property we have verified. For scale only, and strictly as historical figures: in past years set menus at Mayakoba properties have run around $75 USD per person and buffets around 1,100 pesos, while beachfront restaurants in Playa del Carmen have sat closer to 750 pesos, some with reduced pricing for children. One Riviera Maya property charged $168 USD per person for Christmas Eve and $135 for Christmas Day last season. Expect higher this year. December is the start of high season and rates along this coast have been rising.
The weather, and the seaweed
Late November through February is the most comfortable stretch of the year here, and it is also the lowest point of the sargassum season. Worth knowing if beach conditions are part of your decision.
These are real leads we have not been able to confirm against a current official page, so we are not presenting them as fact. Etéreo at Kanai is reported to be running a Thanksgiving collaboration from 25 to 27 November with Baldío, a MICHELIN Green Star restaurant from Mexico City. If that holds it is the most distinctive Thanksgiving on the coast. JW Marriott Cancún is reported to have published adult and child pricing for a Thanksgiving dinner at Bravío, which would make it the only property with figures out. Banyan Tree Mayakoba is reported to have a Christmas and New Year stay package including a discount on festive dinners, which is an accommodation offer rather than a publicly bookable dinner. Maroma, a Belmond hotel publishes an extensive festive program, but the version we could reach is last season’s. Kempinski Cancún, Kanan Tulum and The St. Regis Kanai all have holiday dining pages whose year we could not establish. We are calling each of them.
Nothing published for 2026 from NIZUC, Hotel Esencia, The Riviera Maya EDITION at Kanai, Alila Mayakoba, Grand Velas, Hotel Xcaret, Chablé Maroma, Palmaïa, La Casa de la Playa or the independent dining rooms in Cancún and Puerto Morelos that have served holiday menus before. We are contacting them directly rather than waiting for press releases.
Common questions
When is Thanksgiving 2026 in Mexico?
Thursday, 26 November 2026. It is a United States holiday, not a Mexican one, so nothing closes and no public celebration takes place. What you will find is resorts and restaurants serving Thanksgiving dinners for visiting guests.
Is Christmas Eve or Christmas Day the bigger celebration here?
Christmas Eve, by a distance. Nochebuena is when Mexican families gather and eat, typically very late. December 25 is quieter, and some independent restaurants stay closed.
Can I book a holiday dinner without staying at the resort?
Sometimes, and no property has confirmed its 2026 policy in writing yet. Call the restaurant directly and ask whether outside reservations are accepted and whether the price differs.
Is the holiday dinner included in an all-inclusive stay?
Often not. Holiday dinners are frequently a supplement even for guests already staying on the plan. Confirm before you book the room.
We will keep updating this
This guide went up on 29 October, before most properties had announced. We are adding confirmed menus, prices, booking deadlines and outside-guest access as they come in, and we are telephoning properties rather than waiting for press releases to arrive. The date at the top of this page changes every time we verify something new.
If you run a restaurant or a property with holiday dining this year, we would like to include it. Send details to hola@therivieramayaedit.com.
